Don Webster - Woodturner
About my work
I am a retired engineer and have been resident in Highworth for almost 50 years. My post-retirement woodturning hobby has become a passion in the past few years.
Consistent with my conservationist principles, I generally work with logs of ethically-sourced native hardwoods donated by friends, neighbours and empathetic local tree surgeons. The size and condition of the logs influences the forms developed . In addition to revealing the wood grain, figure, colour, etc. it is both a necessity and a central principle of my approach to retain or emphasise features such as bark, voids, bark inclusions, burls and spalting. Live edge (retained bark) and natural edge (bark removed but the natural shape of the log is retained) feature regularly in my work. Where the wood lacks distinctive grain patterns, I often apply dyes, scorching or carving.
Since early 2023, I have exhibited my work in several open studio events and individual exhibitions.
